Venture finally sunk

The King Kong vessel The Venture was finally sunk on Tuesday Feb 9th, around 12:30pm. Originally planned for Monday, the scuttling operation couldn't go ahead due to weather conditons (the last thing anybody wanted was the ship going down on the way there!) but Tuesdays conditions were as perfect as I've ever seen them in Wellington - mirror smooth seas and windstill conditions. Later on in the day I watched a pod of about 15-20 dolphins jumping around the Petone pier.

I couldn't make it out to the sinking, and missed it leaving the dock for the last time as well, but a colleague of mine managed to take a few pics before it left.

One of the people who's shown lots of interest in the ship (and who has been involved with other local scuttling operations, is the appropriately named Marco Zeeman, who managed to get close enough to the sinking to document the event - there's a video of the final moments on the local NZ news site Stuff.co.nz.

I saw the lonely red tugboat return into the Wellington harbour around 4:30pm - red, like the executioner's axe.

  2. It was a bit, Ruth... I'd have preferred to see it put to good use, but I guess that's a moot point now...

Oh well, moving on. The Harbour Master told me there's three more ships to be sunk, so they'll be busy a bit longer!

Not sure which ones they were, but if one of them resembled a swan, I'll probably be blogging about it again soon! :)

  3. I take it you are referring to Galadriel's boat. Did they actually keep it? Sorry if I'm being a bit naive. Put it down to the terrible cold I've got.:(

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they'll still have that in a warehouse somewhere. Not likely to be sold to the council, don't worry. If there's ever a museum, I fully expect it to be there.

  5. I take it that the swan boat won't be used in 'The Hobbit' but then....

Technically, of course, Galadriel isn't evenn in The Hobbit, but they are apparently going to add the White council scenes to it, and Galadriel is a member of that, so...

Who knows! Exciting, isn't it? :)

  7. It certainly is exciting. I can't wait to see the movies. It's snowing here at the moment. So any Hobbit news cheers me up.I wish I'd stayed in Wellington. I will have to come back.

  8. Things have gone awfully quiet at the moment. All I've heard is unsubstantiated rumours from disreputable sources. I'm not sure why it's gone so quiet!

They're probably quite busy right now though - I heard that Alan Lee, John Howe, and Guillermo del Toro as well as Peter Jackson have all been sighted again in the last few days here in Wellington - that can't be a coincidences (that came from three different sources, too).

As soon as I hear anything, you'll see it here!

    dad?

  10. Dad's recovering nicely, on the up-and-up, by all accounts.

  11. That's really sad. They should have done the museum they want to do in Miramar in that baot...

Sounds like a good plan but not if you'd seen the state of the boat... it really was time for it to sink.

Their biggest worries was getting it to the scuttling grounds before it sank by itself...

In which case it would have blocked the entrance to the harbour... Not good!
